'Hoos Likely Starting Three Freshmen in Season Opener
UVa coach Tony Bennett says he will likely start three freshman in Virginia's season opener Friday night at George Mason.
Bennett says Taylor Barnette will probably start at point guard. Mike Tobey, a 7-foot freshman from New York will start at center and Virginia's most heralded recruit, Justin Anderson will also start along with upper classmen Joe Harris and Akil Mitchell.
Bennett says, "Starting this game I thought we'd be a lot more experienced in the back court but that's not the case with certain guys out, so it will be a tremendous opportunity for our young guys to play, I was asked in the teleconference if the scrimmages revealed if I was enthused or alarmed and I said a little bit of both, you see things you like and also some places where we gotta get better."
Virginia senior point guard Jontel Evans will miss Friday's game still recovering from foot surgery. Cavalier junior guard Malcolm Brogdon also will not play because of a foot injury.
Bennett adds, "Because of injuries because of certain things and what each one brings, they've earned it in a way, the other guys are pretty close we just feel like it gives us a good chance to handle it right away and balance it offensively and see where we stand but the other guys will be ready and it'll be a nice rotation.
