What to do with the Albemarle County School Board's fund balance, or leftover budget, is up in the air after the joint meeting Thursday afternoon between the school board and the board of supervisors.
The school board says it need the leftover money as a reserve fund for emergencies. The board of supervisors says the money would be better spent by funneling it back into the school system through capital projects.
Members of both boards are haggling over how much the school board should retain in its fund balance.
Albemarle County School Board Chair Steve Koleszar said, "We don't want to just sit on the money to have the money. It's good to have in case there's an emergency or, you know, especially in the hard times when in the middle of the year, we've had less revenue from the state or less revenue from the locality from the county that was in our budget."
Albemarle County Supervisor Ann Mallek stated, "We need a fund cap that's a simple percentage so that I will be able to explain it to people. Myself, or the citizens, who are certainly going to be concerned with how the money is going to be used at the end of the year."
After a heated debate, the boards decided to postpone making a decision until the next joint meeting on December 13.
