Changes Coming for Moviegoers in Charlottesville & Albemarle
More changes are coming for moviegoers in central Virginia. We're taking a look at how the new Regal theater at Albemarle County's Shops at Stonefield is impacting the older, smaller ones.
A lot of buzz has surrounded the new theater. The focus has shifted away from some of the existing ones, and not everyone is excited about the change.
As the doors to the new Regal Stonefield Stadium 14 & IMAX officially open Friday, the doors to the old Regal Cinemas 4 (Seminole Square) will close for good. Former employee Janet Goode wanted to visit the theater one last time. Goode's late husband, also a Regal Cinemas employee, has a theater dedicated to him at the new Regal Stonefield Stadium 14 & IMAX.
"It's sad, knowing that Bill was here when it was built. He had part in it being built, and it's going to be very sad for a lot of people," Goode said.
Regal Cinemas 4 (Seminole Square) is expected to be knocked down soon to make room for a new road. "I hate to see this one go," Goode said. "I was hoping they would extend this one, but since the roads going through, they couldn't."
Regal Cinemas 6 (downtown Mall) will turn into an arts theater and join the already popular Vinegar Hill Theatre in playing independent films.
"I feel like there's plenty of movies that everyone can succeed and be happy," said Regal Cinemas manager Jewel Gallagher. "There's plenty of art movies that don't get shown in theaters, and now there's an opportunity for you to see a plethora of them."
Vinegar Hill says that the change of the downtown theater won't impact them. "It's true that Vinegar Hill brings a lot of films to town that you wouldn't necessarily see in Charlottesville otherwise, and we will continue to do that," said Vinegar Hill Theatre manager James Ford.
Amid all the excitement and change, some things are still bittersweet. Goode said, "I enjoyed working here. I enjoyed working at the one downtown. I met a lot of friends and memories I won't forget."
Carmike Cinemas in Albemarle County is rumored to start playing $1 movies. We contacted Carmike Cinemas corporate offices to confirm that and see what their next steps will be with the opening of the new Regal Stonefield Stadium 14 & IMAX. We are still waiting to hear back from them.
