Fluvanna School Board Votes to Furlough Staff, Cut Own Salaries

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday night, the Fluvanna County School Board decided on cuts to help bridge a $300,000 budget gap.  School board members voted to furlough staff for four days during the school year, and the board will also take a 2 percent cut from their own salaries.

Six options were on the table going into Wednesday night's meeting.  Public comment went on for more than an hour and a half.  Only a handful of people signed up to speak, but as the emotion grew in the room more people wanted to talk.

An ongoing theme from teachers who spoke was no more furloughs, which is one of the six options on the table.  Several teachers expressed frustration over the possibility of more cuts, but just as importantly, there was a lot of concern over what that could mean for retaining good teachers.

"We have gotten to the point where it is starting to become less about the kids in our classroom and more about the kids in our homes," said teacher Angela Davis.  "Our paychecks have been sliced and diced over the last couple of years to the point that we are doing juggling acts."

The decision to furlough staff for four days is in addition to current furlough days that were implemented prior to Wednesday's meeting.

The school system needs to recoup a minimum of $308,000.  The chosen option will go into effect on January 2.
