UVa Women's Basketball Media Day

Posted: Updated:

The UVa women's basketball team is ready to begin its second season under coach Joanne Boyle. The 'Hoos open the year with bang hosting instate rival JMU Friday night.

The Cavaliers won 25 games last year, their most in over a decade, but it came to a disappointing loss to James Madison in the WNIT quarterfinals.  The rematch is this Friday night.

UVA senior guard China Crosby says, "This game means not only a lot for me but for our whole team because we lost to them in the WNITS last year, so I'm not looking at it like I have to get back at them, I'm focused on what we have to do as a team to get this game, win this game."

Crosby is now healthy after missing all but 12 games last season to a knee injury.  Crosby along with pre-season All-ACC shooting guard Ataira Franklin anchor a team that returns six experienced veterans, but no dominant scorer.

Coach Boyle says, "If Frankie can give us 20 that's great, if China can do it, then great, but if that's not going to be the case, we need to have more balance on our team and our post involved on that end of the floor."

The 'Hoos are a defensive minded team, but will play without arguably their best defensive player, Lexie Gerson's who's out with season after a hip surgery.  Still, the 'Hoos have been picked to finish 4th in the ACC.

Boyle says, "I always like that the bar is being raised, I like the fact that the coaches and media have respect and enjoy what we did last year and thought highly of it and think we can do that and more this year."

Franklin says, "I would just say that we are eager and excited. We are hungry because of what happened last year, we thought we should have been in the NCAA Tournament but its just more motivation for us. If we can get better each day to improve on the season."

Longtime Cavalier head coach Debbie Ryan and Virginia's All-time scorer Monica Wright will be honored at halftime of Fridays season opener.
