Hurt Re-Elected in 5th District Congressional Race

Posted: Updated:

5th District Congressman Robert Hurt is returning to Washington for a second term.  The Republican representative celebrated his victory over Democrat John Douglass in his hometown of Chatham Tuesday night.

He thanked the crowd of 200 volunteers and supporters. Hurt says this election was different from his first since he had a record to defend.

"We tried to run a positive campaign the best we could on positive issues - creating jobs, balancing the budget. I think it was an affirmation of that message and I'm proud of it," said Hurt.

He avoided criticism of his Democratic challenger, and says he's thankful for the opportunity to represent the 5th District for another two years.

Douglass greeted supporters at Charlottesville's Main Street Arena Tuesday night before conceding.

He reminded his fellow Democrats he was a fighter who was ready to serve his country again, as he did as an Air Force brigadier general. Although Douglass didn't get that opportunity, he was still optimistic about his future.

"I get my life back, I get to spend time with my two boys and get to see a lot more of their high school years and go back to my farm on my tractor, and say life is good," said Douglass.

He congratulated his opponent on a hard fought race that he said earned him a second chance to choose "good over greed", by taking action to stop dangerous uranium mining.
