Ten individuals were given nearly $10,000 each in Staunton Monday night. The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge hosted the Dawbarn awards at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel. The awards celebrate teachers, parents, mentors and anyone else who has shown a commitment to helping kids learn. This year there were 55 nominations.
Recipient Elaine Almarode believes it's all about love.
Elaine Almarode, a Dawbarn award recipient said, "In this profession if you don't love children... All of them. The toughest, the stinkiest, the most difficult to handle. If you don't love them, then we've got to find people that do," she said.
Almarode says she plans to give some of $9,600 to Delta Kappa Gamma's Society of Women Educators.
