Brathwaite and Canady Earn ACC Player of the Week Honors

Posted: Updated:

Virginia Sophomore Chris Brathwaite was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week.  Freshman, Maurice Canady also received ACC honors and was named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week.

Brathwaite had 2 sacks, 5 tackles, and forced a fumble in the win. Virginia's defense held N.C. State to just 19 yards rushing.  True Freshman Canady started his first games and had an interception.

He was a part of a Wahoo defense that held the pack to a season low 216 yards of total offense. He helped limit their passing game to just 197 yards - a season low for the Wolfpack.   The five turnovers were key.

Coach Mike London says, "We practice those ball disruption drills all the time, and in the week of practice, i'd stop practice and we'd go celebrate. Practice celebrating when we have a turnover. I always envisioned the turnovers would come and when they come they'd come in bunches."

UVA Sophomore linebacker, Daquan Romero says, "So this is a spark to win this game, and this was a game we needed and we came together as a team."

UVA Sophomore quarterback Phillip Sims adds, "After a win everything is so much sweeter, the whole team is energized, we're back to normal."

The Cavaliers have a record of 3-6 and still could make a bowl game if they win their final three games.  Virginia plays host to Miami Saturday at Noon.

UVa freshman defensive lineman, Mike Moore says, "We basically feel like it's a playoff system, we just want to win every game that we can so we can get to that bowl."

Romero adds, "It felt good to get the monkey off our back,so this is a spark to win this game, and this was a game we needed and we came together as a team, we talked about it, we ate it, we slept it, and that's what we were focused on.

London says, "When you haven't won in several games you get that feeling back about what it feels like to win, we crave wanting to win games.
