Charlottesville Woman Celebrates a Century

Posted: Updated:

A woman known around her Charlottesville church as "Amazing Grace" is celebrating a century. Family and friends surrounded Grace Darling O'Brien Sunday to wish her a happy 100th birthday.

Members at First Presbyterian Church call her "Amazing Grace" and the "energizer bunny" because she still lives on her own and keeps a busy schedule of workouts, classes, and choir practice. O'Brien also continues to share her wisdom with University of Virginia nursing students.

"I try to watch my words. I found that we often say things we wish we hadn't said and no way can you take those words back," she said.

UVA nursing student Tomaris Smith said, "She still has passion and she still has a very youthful look on life and I feel like that is enough to inspire anybody."

O'Brien has no plans for slowing down. When some of her favorite nursing students honored her Sunday she asked when she could come back to talk to them again.
