Sandy Strikes Graves Mountain Lodge in Madison County

Posted: Updated:

Graves Mountain Lodge in Madison County is facing thousands of dollars in damage after Hurricane Sandy tore through the mountains Monday night.

In its 135-year history, the resort has weathered many storms. Owner James Graves remembers the mess left by Hurricane Hazel back in 1954.

"The orchards that we had, they were just leveled," Graves said. "Houses, barns were leveled."

A tattered barn, ravaged by Hurricane Sandy, sits near the original homestead on the Graves' land. It was rebuilt in place of another barn.

"It was put back after Hurricane Hazel came through in '54," Graves said. "This time, [Sandy] got the better of it."

Winds measured between 60 and 80 miles per hour in Syria, Virginia Monday night. Those winds toppled trees and caused between $250,000 and $500,000 in damages.

Luckily, no one was hurt during the storm. Now power crews are slowly restoring service to rural Syria, Virginia, and Graves Mountain Lodge isn't skipping a beat.

"Everything will be back to normal," Graves said, "and we hope everybody will be back in business."

The lodge saw the lights come on Tuesday night. Graves is hopeful his cabins will be back online by Thursday, just in time to get back in business by the weekend.
