True freshman Michael Birdsong made his first start at quarterback for James Madison on Saturday, leading the Dukes to a 28-21 win against Georgia State on homecoming.
Birdsong admits he is not satisfied with his debut win against the Panthers.
"I can play a lot better than that," says the freshman. "I'm not happy with it."
Head coach Mickey Matthews says, "He did some good things you know I thought overall he was fine. He looked like a freshmen from time to time."
While he may have looked young, his teammates thought his 43 yards rushing, 119 yards passing, and a touchdown were impressive for his first gameday.
Junior running back Dae'Quan Scott says, "He still has some room for improvement, but that's everybody on the team. For his first start, I think he did well."
Birdsong says even though it wasn't a great win, with more time in the pocket, he aims to bring the Dukes closer to a CAA championship.
"The more you play the more you're gonna feel the game, and feel the environment and everything," says Birdsong.
JMU will play at Maine next Saturday.
