Sandy Causes Travel Troubles in the Air and on the Rails

Posted: Updated:

Hurricane Sandy is already creating travel troubles in central Virginia Sunday night. People trying to get in or out of the area are finding delays and cancellations at the airport and train station.

Airlines have already canceled thousands of flights ahead of the storm. People trying to catch a flight at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport (CHO) are already changing plans because of the storm. And Amtrak has already canceled its Northeast Regional service for Monday.

Jeff Stevenson and his family are visiting his son for the University of Virginia's family weekend. But now it looks like they will be in Charlottesville a little longer.

"We just happened to get an email that said your flight from Dulles is canceled so I am a little surprised that we can get into Dulles but we can't get out," said Stevenson.

Although flights are going out from Charlottesville, many passengers are stuck because airlines have canceled connecting flights to the northeast.

The Stevensons and dozens others spent Sunday rearranging how to make their way back home. Janice Rovner, another parent in town for family weekend, is also unexpectedly extending her stay.

"Even though I'm frustrated about it and I wish I could get back home, I feel like they're doing it for our safety," she said.

Amtrak is also suspending service on some routes from Richmond, Newport News, and Washington. The rail line is warning customers to anticipate additional cancellations over the next few days.

Back at the airport, rental car companies are keeping busy as some travelers opt out of flying all together.

Jon Montgomery, a manager at National Car Rental, said, "Customers that flew in here and are waiting to take a flight back out, a lot of them are choosing to drive because flights are getting canceled or they're scared their flights might get canceled."

That's why Katrina Clines rented a car as backup. "If it messes up airports in other parts of the country it is going to trickle down to here," she said.

The airport says it will be offering blankets and food to travelers if they have to wait. Airlines are also offering CHO passengers the option to change their reservations.
