Central Virginia Red Cross Prepares for Hurricane Sandy

Posted: Updated:

Dominion Virginia Power and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative are preparing for disruptions in service due to Hurricane Sandy.  Both companies are readying crews for a quick, safe and timely response. Now, the Central Virginia Red Cross is doing its part to get ready.

Even though we can't control how strong the storm will be, the Red Cross says that people can control how prepared they are.  They are making sure their crews are ready to mobilize next week.

The Red Cross says people should have nonperishable foods available and not rely on their refrigerated items, in case they lose power.  They say people should pack individual "go" kits that last them for at least three days.  The go kits should be stocked with nonperishable food, clothes, batteries and important documents.

"We don't want folks moving around in the storm, so again that preparedness kit, I keep hammering that.  It's so important," said disaster services manager Jack Jones.

The Red Cross also suggests that people who rely heavily on medications check them and get refills before next week.

The Red Cross trucks will be ready to mobilize next week, and will have food and other resources available.   There will be public shelters opening in Charlottesville if necessary, but their locations will be determined by the areas that need it the most.

The Red Cross is urging people to go to their website and use the preparedness checklist as a resource.
