Albemarle HS Volleyball Still Perfect, Eyes Set on State Title

Posted: Updated:

The Albemarle High School Volleyball team has all the makings to snatch up the schools second state title.  They're undefeated with a perfect 24-0 record and about they're spiking their way into the post season.

This success didn't come easy - in fact the patriots have grown up over the past year. Head coach, Mark Ragland said, "They didn't enjoy the experience last year of losing some of the matches that they thought they should have won."

The team was 13-13 in 2011, but this year, they've turned it all around with a perfect record and the most consecutive wins in the history of AHS.

Senior Outside Hitter, Colleen Marshall said, "coach helped get us through some tough points and we pushed really hard so we could be first place."

Senior setter, Jessica Block, added, "we're confident enough that when we get into tricky situations we know were gonna get through them."

Their spirits and their high power offense could even take them all the way to states.

Block said, "That's all of our wishes - to go to states."

Marshall said the cloth hanging in the gym with the lone state championship in 2008 pushes them to work hard each and every day. Marshall said, "We always point to that and we just look it up - we're like we wanna 12 right there."

With the growth and determination they've shown - a state title could be in the patriots court.

Block said, "just to show how big of an improvement we've made. I think all the girls really deserve it."

Albemarle is the top seed for the Commonwealth District Tournament.  The Patriots will host Stafford in the quarterfinals Thursday night at 6pm.
