JMU Making Change At Quarterback

Posted: Updated:

After suffering its first conference loss of the season Saturday against Richmond, JMU is making a switch at quarterback.

True freshman Michael Birdsong will start this weekend when JMU plays host to Georgia State.

Birdsong relieved starting quarterback Justin Thorpe in the third quarter of Saturday's game at Richmond and played well.

Head Coach, Mickey Matthews said, "We just didn't play very hard or good. But in the fourth quarter we competed and Michael - For whatever the reason - Our defense started playing better and everyone started playing better around him so we're anxious to see what he can do."

Wide Receiver, Quintin Hunter, said,  "Birdsong - he's young, but he's a throwing QB ya know. He can run just like Justin [Thorpe], but I think he's more of a passer than Justin [Thorpe] is. So I feel like all the chemistry he has with the receivers is good."

Birdsong completed 11 of 22 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown.

He also rushed for 73 yards and another score.

Mickey Matthews says about Birdsong, "He has a lot of poise and he sees open receivers, the great throwing quarterbacks have one thing in common, they feel the rush and their oblivious to the pass rush and that's the way he is, he sees receivers down the field, Richmond will attest he can run."

Thorpe was benched after throwing two interceptions, and Monday, head coach Mickey Matthews made the surprising announcement that Birdsong will start this week.
