A University of Virginia official says an expected wave of arts and science faculty retirements offers both opportunity and challenges.
In five to seven years, nearly 40 percent of UVA's arts and sciences professors could retire.
Executive Vice President and Provost John Simon says it could be an opportunity to re-invent the science program. But the challenge will be hiring and retaining top faculty.
The Daily Progress says Simon discussed the prospect of retirements during an address to UVA's Board of Visitors last week.
Simon says the university also must try to keep faculty members who get job offers from other schools.
He says UVA didn't make any counter offers in 56 of these cases in the last three years. In 39 other cases, 28 counter offers were accepted.
