Waynesboro Elementary Students Hold Mock Election

Posted: Updated:

The city of Waynesboro is trying to raise up the next generation of informed, engaged voters.  Gifted and talented students from all of the elementary schools held a mock election Friday in the Waynesboro Circuit Courtroom.

The city registrar worked with the Virginia State Board of Elections, so the children could vote on a real electronic machine.  The ballot casting came only after several weeks of learning about politics and government.

Westwood Hills Elementary School student Clara Riggan said, "We've been learning the plans of each... what Obama and Romney have been trying to do, and what they're going to do."

"First thing I do is learn as much as I can about the candidates, and make my decision ahead of time," said Westwood Hills Elementary School student Joe Kearney.

Part of Kearney's education was watching the presidential debates by recording them so he could get to bed on time.  President Barack Obama won the Waynesboro mock election by two votes.
