Southern Environmental Law Center Reports Internet Security Breach

Posted: Updated:

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is not commenting further about what the organization calls a "major internet security breach."

On Tuesday, the SELC sent a press release saying somebody broke into their system and took highly confidential information.

The SELC would not comment on the case on Wednesday, but the following statement was issued on their website

"We learned yesterday that SELC has been the victim of a major internet security breach in which highly confidential information was taken without our consent or authorization—and then widely circulated by email. This was done intentionally as an attempt to disrupt our work and undercut SELC's mission. We have reported this to the FBI, and are taking all necessary action to address the breach and the unauthorized release of confidential information.

If you receive an email referencing an SELC security failure from a third party, we ask you not to open it or click on any of the links. Please delete it immediately."

A FBI spokesperson says they have been contacted about the case, but could not comment any further.

The SELC is an environmental protection nonprofit covering the southeast United States.
