Students at one Albemarle County school are celebrating a bear of an anniversary. It's Baker-Butler Elementary School's 10th birthday this year.
That makes the school about as old as its own students. To mark the occasion, the school unveiled two brand new bear sculptures Tuesday afternoon. With the help of a Charlottesville area artist, students used their own hands to help create the one-of-a-kind reading bears.
"The boys and girls helped texture the fur, and the way they did that was Ed Miller - the artist - had the boys and girls come by and everybody put their handprints in the clay," said Baker-Butler Elementary Principal David Cushman.
The bears will join more than 10 other sculptures on school property. The school will also host a special ceremony Tuesday night to honor the school's namesakes, Albemarle education leaders John Baker and James Butler. That began at 6:30 p.m.
