Piedmont Virginia Community College Turns 40

Posted: Updated:

It's a big birthday, with an even bigger promise for the academic future of central Virginia. Piedmont Virginia Community College just turned 40, and instead of a traditional celebration, administrators are reflecting about their role in the community.

PVCC's president Frank Friedman sat down with NBC29 to talk about the anniversary.  He's looking back on the historic role of community colleges, and looking forward to what role they'll continue to play in the community.

Friedman said in the 70s, when PVCC started, educational opportunities weren't offered to as many people as they are now. He said community colleges opened the doors providing education to people who otherwise might not have the opportunity, like women, racial minorities, and the poor. Fast forward to today, and Friedman says community colleges are still closing the educational gap.

"There is still a huge difference in the college going rate of students coming out of the upper 50% financially compared to the lower 50% financially, so there is still more we must do to get more individuals from low income circumstances, whether it be urban or rural, to get them the opportunities to go to college and reach their potential," Friedman said.

In honor of the milestone, PVCC administrators are urging alumni to network and support the school. They've launched a campaign called $40-4-40 asking people to donate $40 for the 40th anniversary. They've also launched a 40th anniversary website where you can keep up with upcoming events and donate.
