UVA Defends Game Day Recycling Competition Challenge Title

Posted: Updated:

While the Cavaliers took on Maryland inside Scott Stadium Saturday, University of Virginia students were outside to defend a national title.

The Hoos are the reigning champions of the Game Day Challenge Recycling Competition, and this year they're hoping to keep the lead.

Eighty volunteers collected bottles, cans and other recyclables at the entrance to Scott Stadium and at parties across the university. They hope the collection will minimize the tailgate trash that ends up in the landfill.

Jon Torre, a recycling team leader, said, "The big picture goal of this project is to really raise awareness about how wasteful game days can be. They're one of the most notorious sources of trash production on college campuses."

UVA is competing with nearly 80 other schools in the Game Day Challenge. Volunteers think they have a good chance at bringing home a win since the tailgates were packed with homecoming fans.
