With 24 Days to go Campaigns go Door-to-Door

Posted: Updated:

Election Day is 24 days away and Republicans and Democrats in central Virginia are reaching out to potential voters face-to-face.

Both parties are pounding pavement and working the phones with less than a month to go till Election Day. In Albemarle County, on Saturday, Democratic Delegate David Toscano kicked off a day of grassroots action, focusing on the female vote.

"It's not just about reproductive freedom, it's also about economic freedom, the ability to keep a job if you have to leave for some reason to care for a loved one, the ability to get equal pay for equal work," said Toscano.

From there, volunteers set out to canvass and make calls on behalf of U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine.

Republicans also went door-to-door in Albemarle County. They asked people how they felt about President Obama's job the past four years, and encouraged them to vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, U.S. Senate candidate George Allen, and Rep. Robert Hurt.

"We've been asking people if they saw the first presidential debate," said Matt Wertman, with the Albemarle County Republican Party. "Many of them have said that they did and they agreed that Mitt Romney came out as the clear winner of that debate and that they are starting to think that he is the best one to get us out of this economic recession."

Republican volunteers say they're targeting undecided voters, like Leah Wayner.

"I do appreciate that there are people who are passionate about the candidates who you know feel strongly enough that they will go door-to-door and talk to strangers," she said.

In the last few weeks until the election, both campaigns can agree on one thing - personal connection is what will help them win over those last few undecided voters. On Saturday, the campaigns also reminded people to register to vote. The deadline is coming up this Monday.
