Posted: Updated:

The Center for Nonprofit Excellence hosted its fifth annual Philanthropy Day celebration Friday at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville.

The gathering gave philanthropists from the community a chance to mingle and celebrate the positive impact they have had on the area.

Christine Nardi, the executive director of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence said, "Philanthropy Day is actually a national celebration in communities across the country celebrate the philanthropists among them that give so much to the community."

The sold out crowd of over 400 community leaders, businesses and nonprofits listened to guest speaker Robert Sweeney discuss the constantly changing face of philanthropy.

Nardi said, "You can decide today you're going to find a nonprofit you're passionate about either as a board member or volunteer for an organization and you can be engaged in your community."

The luncheon also gave a behind the scenes look at groups who have benefited from philanthropy.

Charlottesville police Chief Tim Longo said, "We've benefited so greatly, whether it be training equipment, the home ownership program that our foundation has brought forth for our officers so they can live and be part of the community that they serve. That only happened because of the many groups that are represented here today."

The event has received positive feedback over the years and will continue generating innovative ideas for the community's leaders.
