Deep cuts in defense spending were among the top issues, as Senator Mark Warner stopped in Staunton Friday.
He met with students from Mary Baldwin College, who peppered him with questions during an informal town hall. One member of the school's cadet corps asked about the impact of automatic budget cuts to the military, known as "sequestration."
Warner is among a group of eight senators trying to keep it from happening.
"The only reason sequestration - which Congress put in place, by the way - was put out there was as a threat if the super-committee didn't do its job. Well, it's time for us to do our job," said the senator.
Warner, a Democrat, also talked about deficit reduction and job creation during an economic forum in Roanoke on Friday.
