Western Albemarle Off To 6-0 Start

Posted: Updated:

The Western Albemarle football team is off to its best start since 2009, but new head coach Ed Redmond won't take credit for it.

"It's not me," says Redmond, "I'm the only newcomer here"'

Redmond has revamped the Warrior's program in his first season and led them to a 6-0 start.

"I came in with a different philosophy then the previous staff in terms of defensive focus, in terms of toughness," says Redmond."

WAHS senior linebacker Tommy Mullin says, "He met all the players he said we're not going to have 56-52 games, like last year when we lost to Monticello.  He likes the character of 'Tough as Nails.'"

Redmond's defensive mentality is best represented through...a green bucket.

Redmond says, "We have a thing we created, the bucket of nails over there, which symbolizes toughness to our kids.  It's a green bucket that has a bunch of old rusty nails a couple horseshoes"

Senior wide receiver Daniel Kuzjak says, "Old rusty nails are tough, they'll bend but they won't break."

The Warriors haven't broken all season long, most notably against crosstown rival Monticello, whom they shut out 28-0.

Redmond says, "We have excellent offensive weapons but I think in the end, if your gonna win and be successful long term, you have to have a defensive mentality."

His players say they don't get to far ahead of themselves.

Kuzjak says, "We're still just sticking to that game-to-game basis and focusing on what's ahead of us."

And no matter what obstacles lie ahead, the coach hopes his team continues to bend and not break, as they prepare for the playoffs.

Redmond says, "You're going to have adversity, you're gonna have good things bad things happen, but you gotta stay the course. "

Western Albemarle will host Charlottesville Friday night at 7:30 pm.
