Charlottesville's Market Central Receives USDA Grant
Charlottesville's Market Central is one of five farmer's markets across the United States to receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The USDA has given $76,000 to the market, and the market will give $34,000 of that to the Healthy Food Coalition. The group will be using the money to turn its food canning project into a business.
"Taking their foods that they can't sell because our consumers are trained to think that everything has to look perfect, but some of those not so perfect looking things are the sweetest, the tastiest," said Joanie Freeman with the Healthy Food Coalition.
Market Central is using its $42,000 of the grant for advertising purposes, kitchen rental expenses and to start paying some volunteers.
