Postcards Offer Glimpse into Charlottesville's Past

Posted: Updated:

As the end of Charlottesville's 250th year approaches, at times, it's hard to get a sense of just how significant this anniversary is. Lucky for us, one noteworthy Charlottesville history buff has a unique collection that offers an authentic peek into the past.

Not many people know what city councilor and former Mayor Dave Norris has been piecing together in his spare time, but for the last 15 years, Norris has painstakingly searched and curated an extensive collection of Charlottesville postcards. The collection features more than 800 different postcards, some dating back more than a hundred years.

It has been something of a history lesson for Norris. While there are ample images of Monticello and the rotunda at the University of Virginia, few postcards depict the lives of African Americans or other minority groups in the city.

"It's interesting to see how a community sees itself. And how a community sells itself. And what images it puts forth," said Norris.

He has spent thousands of dollars, and thousands of hours piecing this collection together. Norris says he's now in conversation with several groups to find some way to preserve his collection.
