Yancey Elementary School is getting a new life and it could come with a new use. Albemarle County supervisors and the school board are set to talk about additional options for the Esmont school.
The school board wants to create a committee to evaluate possible additional uses for Yancey Elementary School and wants to work with supervisors on how to make that a reality, while keeping the school up and running.
The front runner is a southern Albemarle intergenerational center. It would provide medical care, a youth center, employment services and adult day health care.
The group has a site on Route 6 between Esmont and Scottsville, but the bad economy is hindering fundraising efforts. So the committee will determine if the intergenerational center is a good fit for Yancey.
"There are needs for other services from the county in that area," said Steve Koleszar with the Albemarle County School Board. "And co-locating them with Yancey would offer would offer a lot of advantages."
The school board voted in August to buy more land around the school site and add a new roof, HVAC and septic systems. The total renovations will cost about $1.4 million.
This portion of the meeting starts at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon. It's all happening at the county office building on McIntire Road.
