Albemarle County Fire Prevention Week

Posted: Updated: Oct 7, 2012 09:46 PM EDT

Kids in central Virginia are learning to stop, drop, and roll to kick-off National Fire Prevention Week. Albemarle County Fire Rescue, Hollymead Fire Rescue, and the Albemarle County Fire Corps are working together to raise awareness about fire safety.

Sunday at Hollymead Town Center, kids learned the importance of finding two ways to get out of the house in case of fire, and having a safe meeting place.

Howard Lagomarsino, the acting Albemarle County fire marshal, explained, "Make sure you have working smoke detectors, that's one of the single most important ways that you can protect yourself and protect your family is to have smoke detectors that work. Check your batteries. We are getting ready to change the clocks again, it's time to check the batteries on the smoke detectors."

On Wednesday, having a working fire alarm just might win you a free pizza. Albemarle firefighters will go door-to-door to check smoke detectors. Homes with working alarms will get a Domino's pizza. Below is a list of other Fire Prevention Week events.
