Burnley Moran Students Walk for Wellness

Posted: Updated:

Students, teachers and parents at Burnley Moran Elementary School celebrated exercise on Friday. The whole school community "walked for wellness."

The students have been training for a month for the Walk for Wellness event and on Friday, they finally got to participate in the walkathon. But many of them were so excited they ran or skipped around the track instead.

All of the pre-K through fourth-grade students set goals for themselves for the number of laps they would walk or run around the track.

Many of the students got sponsors and pledged money to the school.  All of the proceeds for the walkathon will go to the Parent Teacher Organization.

Kate Bennis, a Burnley Moran parent, said, "Mostly, I think what it's doing is it's getting the kids excited about exercising - you should have seen the second graders take off with screams and yells and they ran and ran and ran."

The event was meant to give students an appreciation for health and encourage them to exercise. The school made those laps around the track fun with music and snacks.

The third and fourth-grade students who weren't dancing around the track at Burnley Moran, headed to the Rivanna Trail for part of the walkathon.
