Line Painting Truck Crashes, Kills Driver

Posted: Updated:

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a line-painting truck on Interstate 81 in Augusta County.

Spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the truck wasn't painting when the crash occurred at 7:05 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes near Spottswood. The truck was headed to a work site in Nelson County.

Geller says the truck's right front tire blew out and the driver lost control. The truck then hit a guardrail and overturned. The driver, Edwin M. Tam, 59, of Troutville, died at the scene. Further investigation reveals that Tam was wearing a seat belt.

An adult male passenger was first transported to Augusta Health Center and then upon evaluation of his injuries flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

Virginia State Police Trooper T.M. Simmons is investigating a fatal crash in Augusta County. The crash occurred Friday (Oct. 5) at 7:05 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 at the 207 mile marker.

A line-painting truck was traveling northbound when the front, right tire blew out. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the right side of the road, struck the guardrail and overturned.

The driver, Edwin M. Tam, 59, of Troutville, died at the scene. Further investigation reveals that Tam was wearing a seat belt.

An adult male passenger was first transported to Augusta Health Center and then upon evaluation of his injuries flown to UVA Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The truck was not painting at the time of the crash. It was traveling northbound on I-81 en-route to a work site in Nelson County.

The Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team responded to the scene to inspect the commercial vehicle and assist Trooper Simmons with the investigation. At this stage of the investigation the cause appears to be a mechanical problem with the front tire.

By 1:20 p.m., the crashed vehicle had been removed and all northbound lanes of I-81 were open.
