1 dead, 3 ill in VA from Meningitis Outbreak

Posted: Updated:

Virginia's state epidemiologist says one person has died and three are ill from a suspected meningitis outbreak after receiving steroid spinal injections for back pain.

Dr. David Trump said Wednesday the injections were administered at two medical facilities in southwest Virginia. He said potentially several hundred people may have received the steroid injections.

Health officials say an outbreak of a rare and deadly form of meningitis has sickened 26 people in five states and four people have died. The steroid suspected in the outbreak has been recalled.

Trump said the Virginia Department of Health is working with the two Virginia medical facilities to identify patients who received the treatment, and he expects additional cases. The two facilities are believed to be the only source of the recalled steroid in Virginia.
