UVA Medical Center Receives Top 100 Honor for Women's Care

Posted: Updated:

A national hospital review lists University of Virginia Medical Center as one of the best for female patients.  Becker's Hospital Review puts the Charlottesville center on its latest list of "100 Hospitals with Great Women's Health Programs".

The review credits the recognition on UVA's evaluations and treatments for high-risk cancer patients, programs for breastfeeding mothers and care for teenagers.

Dr. Jef Ferguson, chairman of UVA's department of obstetrics & gynecology said, "I think it's highly individualized, and I think that's very important. It's patient and family-centric which is really trying to put the patient and her family as the focus of the care, trying to do things to make it convenient for them, explain the care well, make sure the most up to date care is provided."

The medical center says its role as a research and teaching hospital also helped it earn a spot in the nation's top 100.

A UVA doctor is currently studying breast density as a way to determine individual risk for cancer.
