ArtInPlace Kicks Off Season, Barracks Road Sculpture Installed

Posted: Updated:

A few new works of art might be catching your attention as you drive around town.  ArtInPlace is kicking off its 2012-2013 season.

Monday, a sculpture called "The Story Teller" moved into its new home in front of the Barracks Road Shopping Center.  The structure is made of steel and cast iron, and weighs nearly 700 pounds.

It is one of 10 works of art that will be featured this season.

"I think what the town has begun to enjoy is that it's sort of a gallery show on the streets, and that if they don't like a piece, that's as much discussion as if they love a piece," said Elizabeth Breeden with ArtInPlace.

"The Story Teller", by North Carolina artist Mark Connelly, is inspired by ancient monoliths in Great Britain and Ireland like Stonehenge.  Connelly said the piece was a "modern take on an ancient theme."  Dochas and sonas, the markings on the side of the sculpture, mean hope and happiness in a pre-Celtic language called Ogham.
