UVA Depth Chart Lists Rocco "Or" Sims As Starting QB

Posted: Updated:

Virginia football coach Mike London said Monday afternoon he needed a little bit more time to make a decision about who his starting quarterback will be for Saturday's game at Duke.

UVA released its depth chart Monday night at about 6:30pm in advance of this weekend's game Monday evening, and the quarterback position is listed as such:

QB   16   Michael Rocco      6-3  225  Jr.
or    14   Phillip Sims          6-2  215  So.
        5    David Watford     6-1  200  So.

While Rocco is still listed first, an "Or" now appears between the junior's name and Phillip Sims.

About a half hour after the depth chart was released, Mike London indicated on his radio show that Sims would be the starter if he weren't suffering from a leg injury suffered against Louisiana Tech.   London implied that Sims would take the first-team snaps if healthy.

Rocco threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns against Louisiana Tech, but he also threw three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

Rocco now has eight interceptions for the season.

The 'Hoos fell behind by 17 in the third quarter on Saturday and ended up losing their third straight game.

Backup quarterback Phillip Sims finished the game for the third week in a row, and he had his most impressive outing yet, throwing two fourth quarter touchdowns with no interceptions.

The late rally fell short, thanks in part to 16 Cavalier penalties, but once again fans saw Sims' potential.

London says, "We are going to evaluate everything we do, and the 'Who,' who the personnel is. For me and coach Lazor and the offensive staff, for everyone to understand this is not just about one individual. This is about the team, and who gives us the best chance, and that decision will be made very soon."

Sims says, "I just go out there whenever I'm called on and go make plays for my team. Your goal should be to get better and help your team, and that's all I try to do."

"Really, it's not my decision," says Rocco. "I just got to prepare myself to play hard in practice, and keep being a leader. It's in God's hands, and I have faith in that."

London adds, "Michael Rocco is a great young man. He's been our starting quarterback for 18 months. I value him. Coming into this season, he was, and until a decision is made, is the quarterback, the starting quarterback."

Virginia's game at Duke Saturday kicks off at 3 o'clock.

It was announced Monday that the Cavaliers' home game against Maryland a week from Saturday will be a 3 o'clock kickoff.

Both games will be shown on Comcast Sportsnet.
