Council to Appoint Belmont Improvement Committee

Posted: Updated: Sep 30, 2012 09:38 PM EDT

Monday night, Charlottesville City Council plans to appoint a 13-member steering committee to focus on improvements for the Belmont neighborhood.

The committee will be made up of community members, business owners, and public housing representatives along with city staffers. They will identify sections of the neighborhood that need work including landscaping, improvements to public housing, adding more mixed income housing, and transportation.

Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Huja said, "We are going to look at the street system, adequate sidewalks, adequate bike lanes, adequate transit. You need a good transit system to get people where they need to get to."

The committee will provide its input to a firm which will put together a report on the Belmont area improvements in about six months.

In addition to the appointments, council will look at a land lease agreement on a property the city purchased earlier this year.

Council bought Davis Field off Park Street to expand the city's park system.  Now, it is looking at leasing part of that 6.5 acre property to a local youth sports league to offset some of the cost of buying the land.  Leasing the land is expected to bring in at least $10,000 a year for the city.

The meeting will take place at City Hall at 7:00 p.m. Click here to view the agenda.
