Buckingham County Deputy Honored for Valor

Posted: Updated:

FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Sheriff's Association is honoring a Buckingham County deputy for valor.

Sgt. Steven Bodek received the association's Deputy Valor Award for 2012 earlier this month during a ceremony in Virginia Beach.

Radio station WFLO in Farmville says Bodek was nominated for the award by Sheriff Bill Kidd in part because of his actions during a confrontation with an armed man in September 2011.

Bodek and Deputy Eric Bryan were responding to a domestic call when the incident occurred. They exchanged gunfire with 39-year-old Jeremy Wayne Farley, who died at the scene. The deputies weren't injured.

Kidd says the situation may have been worse if Bodek hadn't been there.
