A film festival kicked off Monday night at the University of Virginia to showcase the struggles refugee families face coming to America.
The documentary "The Last Survivor" was featured on the opening of the first ever Refugee Film Festival. The film follows genocide survivors. Charlottesville's International Rescue Committee and UVA's Center for International Studies are putting on the three-day festival to highlight the roles refugees play in our communities.
IRC Executive Director Harriet Kuhr said, "We were looking for a way to reach out to the UVA community and help them learn a little bit more about who the refugees are that are coming to Charlottesville, and what brought them here that they had to flee their countries."
The films scheduled for Monday through Wednesday begin at 6:00 in Nau Hall Auditorium 101. Click here to learn more about the documentary topics and to view trailers for the films.
