Charlottesville Time Capsule Audio Recording Recovered
Against all odds, history buffs have managed to save seriously damaged audio recordings taken 50 years ago in Charlottesville.
The 1962 audio recording was found inside the Charlottesville time capsule earlier this year. The capsule, and its contents, were in pretty bad shape when unearthed in May. Historical experts were shocked that they could salvage the recording.
Steven Meeks, with the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, said, "Not knowing the survivability of tapes like that, I was not very optimistic we would be able to extract everything. Especially the smaller tape, which is an acetate based tape."
The city is planning to take more extreme measures to protect what's put inside a new time capsule. That's set to be buried in December. Click on "Audio Only: Let Freedom Ring Radio Clip" to hear the salvaged recording.
