Orange Planning Commission Votes Down Tactical Training Center

Posted: Updated:

Plans for a tactical training center in Orange County have been put on hold.

After hours of contentious public comment Thursday night, the planning commission voted against the zoning amendment blocking the chance of having the facility in the county.

Many were concerned that the center's potential use of helicopters, firearms, and attack dogs would be a noise and safety issue.

"Our church is so close to the brickyard where they were going to do the actual training, and it would have been devastating to us because of the noise, safety issue, and traffic," said Rev. Peggy Brice, who opposed the amendment.

Many told the commission guns and farms don't mix.

"There are no time restrictions, time of day, days of the week," said Linda Gibson, who opposes the project. "We can have helicopters, gun fire, dogs barking 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are no noise ordinances in Orange County."

"I've lived in Somerset for 42 years. They are putting it on the fast track and I don't know why," said Marcia Poole, another opponent of the project.

Many of Thursday night's speakers also called the zoning amendment vague.  According to the planning and zoning report, a tactical training facility could be used for military, law enforcement and personal protection training among other things. But it was unclear exactly how the company Global Dynamic Security would operate the Somerset property in question.

It was on the agenda that the commission would deal with the special use permit request from the president of Global Dynamic Security, but that has been postponed until October 18.

The planning commission's decision is a recommendation of denial, the matter will still be discussed among the board of supervisors.
