Community Members Discuss Dredging on South Fork Reservoir

Posted: Updated:

Community members gathered Thursday night at the Albemarle County Office Building to speak up about dredging on the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir.

The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) put out a request for proposals in February for potential dredging on the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir.

Thursday night, Orion Marine Construction's proposal was up for discussion.  It wants to dredge in three sections of the reservoir.  The dredging would increase the volume of the reservoir and give new sediment a place to go.

"This is an interesting process because the proposal has not yet been evaluated to determine if we want to go to the contract stage, so people have an opportunity to provide valuable input," Tom Frederick with the RWSA said.

Orion says it would remove approximately 300,000 cubic yards of sediment.  The project would cost $3.5 million, a budget already approved by the RWSA.
