UVa freshman Todd Wharton scored his first career goal in the 30th minute which turned out to be the game winner as UVA blanked Drexel 2-0.
Virginia got an insurance goal from Will Bates in the 77th minute. It was Bates' fifth goal of the season. Virginia improves to 4-2-1 with the win.
Wharton described his memorable first career goal at UVA saying, "Bates got to it and he slipped Scott a through ball, Scotty faked like he was going to play it near post and I was trailing from behind and he cut it back and I just one-touched it near post. It was exciting I'm glad we got the win too."
Head Coach George Gelnovatch said, "I think we were very economical, we didn't put a lot of shots on and the goals for the amount of shots but they were quality goals and we took our chances well, patience and economical and very well executed and I think the second goal kind of deflated the game it was huge to take the air out of the game and their energy and momentum, that second goal really settled things down for us."
Virginia's next game is Friday at defending national champion North Carolina.
