#13 Hokies Fall 35-17 to Future ACC Coastal Division Opponent

The #13 Virginia Tech football team lost to Pittsburgh 35-17 Saturday afternoon at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

The Hokies drop to 2-1 this season.

The Panthers improve to 1-2 and snap Tech's 13-game road winning streak, the longest active streak in the country.

Pitt has beaten the Hokies fourth straight times when Tech is ranked.

Virginia Tech turned the ball over four times, all in the first half, including three Logan Thomas interceptions.

Thomas finished the game 14-of-31 passing for 265 yards with one touchdown and those three picks. The redshirt junior also led the Hokies with seven carries for 28 yards.

Tech gained 59 yards total on 26 rushes as a team.

"Their first two games, they didn't play as hard as they did today," said Thomas of Pitt's defense. "They're a good defense. They're strong. They're physical. They're fast, and they make you make mistakes. They did that today, and that's what won them the game."

Marcus Davis caught four passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Corey Fuller had four catches for 44 yards.

For Pitt, Tino Sunseri completed 19-of-28 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns.

Mike Shanahan caught five passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. Devin Street had four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Freshman Rushel Shell ran for 157 yards on 23 carries. Ray Graham carried the ball 24 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass in the win.

"They got some great running backs," said Virginia Tech senior linebacker Bruce Taylor. "We knew that coming in. Like I said, #4 (Shell) kind of surprised us with how well he ran, but it wasn't anything like the structure of the defense or anything. It was just missed tackles for the most part."

The Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and 21-0 lead in the second quarter, gaining 305 yards of total offense in the first 20 minutes of the game.

A Cody Journell field goal made it 21-3 at half, and Kyshoen Jarrett's 94-yard punt return for a touchdown (the second longest in Tech history) made it 21-10 in the third quarter, but the teams traded touchdowns in the second half.

The Hokies host Bowling Green next Saturday at noon. ESPNU will televise the game.
