Jake McGee made the biggest play of the game in Virginia's win against Penn State. On third and 16 and in the final minutes, he leaped to grab a Michael Rocco pass, the first down catch and 44-yard pickup kept the drive alive.
Then for an encore, McGee caught the game winning touchdown with 1:28 left, giving Virginia a 1-point win.
McGee says, "I wouldn't say I've been surprised because I was confident in what I can do it was just getting the chance to do it, some of the catches have been a little crazier than I thought they would be."
McGee opened some eyes in Virginia's season opener when he made a highlight reel one-handed grab. After two games, McGee is Virginia's second leading receiver with six catches for 122 yards.
UVA defensive back Demetrious Nicholson says, "He's very athletic, if you just hang around him you wouldn't expect that from him, when he's out on the field he's talented and athletic and proposes mismatches for defenses."
UVA linebacker Steve Greer says, "He's bigger than a lot of defensive backs and he can run past a lot of linebackers. We had a little battle going on in training camp and we had fun with it. He's a really good tight end making plays. We're not surprised by the catches he's making because he makes them in practice."
McGee played quarterback in high school at Collegiate in Richmond. He has told his coaches that he wants to be like former UVA tight end, Heath Miller, who also played quarterback in high school but then made the switch.
Mike London says, "His role will increase because he has demonstrated performance and production and that's what we are trying to find. I think his best football is in front of him at the same time I think he can be as good as he wants to be."
McGee originally signed with the University of Richmond, but when Coach Mike London left Richmond for UVA, McGee followed London to Charlottesville.
