U.S. News and World Report has once again ranked the University of Virginia as the No. 2 public university in the country.
UVA ranked 24th overall among public and private schools, and scored well in the best value category.
Where the university fell short was the financial resources spent per student on research, student services and instruction. UVA was ranked 53rd in that category, the lowest among the top 25 schools.
U.S. News and World Report says private schools often do better in the financial resources category because they have larger endowments than public schools, and because they don't face the threat of budget cuts.
Colette Sheehy, UVA's vice president of management and budget, said, "The fact that we can be ranked as high as we are, with a 53 on the financial resources ranking, means that we must be pretty efficient."
The financial resources category accounts for 10 percent of a school's overall ranking.
