Charlottesville Treasurer Jennifer Brown announced Thursday that she is retiring from her position as city treasurer effective October 1, 2012.
Ms. Brown said that mounting health issues prompted her decision. "I've had a number of fairly serious health problems in recent years, and as much as I wish I could complete the last year of my term, I've reluctantly realized that I cannot presently serve the citizens of Charlottesville to the highest standard possible."
Ms. Brown was first elected Treasurer in 1993 and became the first woman in that post. She is now in the final year of her fifth consecutive term, having served as treasurer for the past 19 years.
