Wednesday night, Albemarle County supervisors approved a zoning change to allow the proposed Wegmans Shopping Center at Fifth and Avon streets to move forward.
The development will bring the grocery chain to the county and increase retail offerings south of Charlottesville. This is the first in a series of approvals needed to get the project moving. If all approvals are secured, developers say the shopping center will create around 1,000 jobs and generate $9 million in tax revenue every year.
Developers hope to begin construction next summer and hope to finish the project in the middle of 2015.
