People from all walks of life forgot about their day jobs on Tuesday to spend some time helping their neighbors. Volunteers fanned out to dozens of job sites throughout Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro.
Their projects ran the spectrum from window washing at nonprofit agencies, to complete home renovations for families in need. For the past several years, the United Way's "Day of Caring" has taken place on 9/11, to coincide with the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
Janice Gentry with the Waynesboro Senior Center said, "It's really nice that something as tragic as September 11 was, has turned into a day of service, and a way to add to that community feeling that happened right after September 11."
The senior centers in Staunton and Waynesboro kept "Day of Caring" volunteers busy with painting jobs, furniture repairs and washing of transport vans. Some of those projects will continue all week long.
