A major facilities upgrade is nearly finished at William Monroe High School in Greene County. But the upgrade is proving troublesome for the project's general contractor.
The project addressed a series of much needed improvements, including new athletics fields and upgrades to the performing arts center. Greene County ended up paying $5.3 million for it all, even though it actually cost contractors, Roanoke based Breakell Inc., $400,000 more to build. That is money the contractor will have to pay.
"The contractors underbid the project significantly by about $400,000, and that's their estimate not ours," Superintendent Dr. David Jeck said. "I don't envy them, and I feel badly for them, but in the end I'm glad we got what we got because it's an expensive project."
The project is now about 95 percent complete, with only a few minor cosmetic items left to finish. NBC29 reached out to Breakell Inc. for comment on this story, but has not received a response.
