On Tuesday, a thank you event in Waynesboro honored police and first responders. The Summit Square retirement community marked the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that claimed so many emergency personnel.
It offered a "lawn party" atmosphere with carnival games, music and a cookout, but a noon-time ceremony served as a sobering reminder of the real danger that comes with a 911 call.
Waynesboro City Councilor Mike Harris said, "I remind our emergency service personnel - when you leave home, leave home in good spirits, not an argument with your wife or your husband, whichever it would be, because you just don't know if you're going to come back home that day."
The event coincides with the 100th anniversary of Sunnyside, the company that owns Summit Square. The retirement home was created from the former Waynesboro Community Hospital.
